What is Baytril Otic

Baytril Otic is a potent antimicrobial solution specifically formulated to treat canine ear infections (otitis externa) caused by susceptible bacteria and fungi. Combining enrofloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, with silver sulfadiazine, an effective antifungal and antibacterial agent, this emulsion addresses common pathogens responsible for ear infections in dogs.

How to Use Baytril Otic

1. Preparation:

   • Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure proper mixing of the emulsion.
   • Clean the dog's ear canal to remove debris and exudate, allowing the medication to contact the affected area directly.

2. Dosage:

   • For dogs weighing 35 lbs (15.9 kg) or less: Administer 5–10 drops into the affected ear.
   • For dogs weighing more than 35 lbs: Administer 10–15 drops into the affected ear.

3. Application:

   • Tilt the dog's head so the affected ear is facing upward.
   • Instill the appropriate number of drops into the ear canal.
   • Gently massage the base of the ear to ensure even distribution of the medication.

4. Frequency:

   • Apply twice daily (every 12 hours) for up to 14 days, or as directed by your veterinarian.

• Active Ingredients:

  • Enrofloxacin: 5 mg/mL
  • Silver sulfadiazine: 10 mg/mL

• Inactive Ingredients:

  • Benzyl alcohol
  • Cetyl stearyl alcohol

Are There Any Side Effects of Baytril Otic?

While Baytril Otic is generally well-tolerated, some dogs may experience:

• Temporary hearing loss or vestibular dysfunction

What Precautions Should Be Taken When Using Baytril Otic?

• Tympanic Membrane Integrity: Ensure the dog's eardrum is intact before application, as the safety of Baytril Otic in dogs with perforated tympanic membranes has not been evaluated.
• Hypersensitivity: Do not use in dogs with known hypersensitivity to quinolones or sulfonamides.
• Use in Breeding Dogs: The safety of Baytril Otic in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been established. Consult your veterinarian before use in these cases.
• Human Safety: Avoid contact with eyes and skin. In case of accidental exposure, rinse thoroughly with water. Keep out of reach of children.
